The first ever underwater museum in Europe has been completed. The atlantic museum is located deep in the waters off the Spanish island of Lanzarote. The human figures which are placed in the depths of the sea between 12 and 15 meters on the seafloor of Las Coloradas bay will act as a breeding site for local species.
Speaking to CNN, international sculpture artist Decaires Taylor, says; “the whole idea was for it to become a portal to another world. I want it to inspire people to understand more about oceans and threats facing it”.
Taylor who is also responsible for sculptures at underwater museums in the Bahamas, Mexico and the Antilles makes his sculptures from concrete depicting activities from everyday human life.
The museum has been made open since March 2016 during its creation process, but only now officially allowing visitors to see the completed work consists of over 300 sculptures.
